Lash serum works by giving nourishment to the eyelashes and promoting hair growth. All serums work so that they promote growth during the period you use it, however, they work in different ways. The result you get from the serum will not persist your entire life if you stop. No lash serum works like that. This is because the hair follicles in the eyelashes, the same as with ordinary hair on the head, have a limited length of life. Losing lashes is a natural part of the biological cycle. Serum for the eyelashes are divided into three main categories based on their main active ingredients:

Peptide based

Peptides are small proteins that stimulate growth for the hair follicles and promote natural hair production. By applying a peptide-based lash serum on the lash, you can stimulate the hair follicles to grow more hair. These types of lash serum provide the same growth as a prostaglandin-derived eyelash serum does, but with much fewer side effects. Hickap's Lash & Brow Serum is a peptide-based serum. The key ingredients are powerful peptides, allantoin, green caviar from algae and high and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid. The skincare properties come from marine Antarcticine that helps rebuild and strengthen the sensitive skin around the eye.

Vitamin based

Vitamin-based eyelash growth serum works by moisturizing the lashes from the outside to in. By moisturizing the lashes with vitamins, you can prevent them from breaking or falling off. As a result, the lashes become longer and healthier. Although these serums do not work as well to promote hair growth, they do an incredible job at improving the condition of the eyelashes.

Prostaglandin-derived

The good news about prostaglandin-derived lash serum is that they work for most people. The bad news is that the side effects tend to outweigh the result. These growth serums are derived from drugs originally developed to treat an eye condition called glaucoma (green cataract). This type of lash serum acts by artificially expanding the anagen phase of hair growth on the eyelashes.

Although effective, these eyelash serums tend to have serious side effects and negative side effects such as:

- Decreased eye pressure if the lash serum enters the eye
- Darker eyelids
- Color changes of the iris (for example, blue eyes can become brown!)
- Undesired hair growth in areas other than the eyelashes
- Itching, swelling, inflammation and redness

Since prostaglandin-derived lash serum has so serious side effects, both the Swedish medical products agency and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued warnings against them.
